Description

ABSTRACT. This article explores the use of metaphor in the personal narratives of two Maori leaders regarding their experiences with the Maori language. These narratives come from a collection of 72 interviews and were chosen for their contrasting qualities. In each, the narrators used metaphors appropriate to their respective backgrounds. The analysis shows how metaphors contribute to the texture of each narrative. While many of the metaphorical uses of language are consistent with the expectations of the English language, some metaphors appear to represent ideas specific to Maori culture. * 1. INTRODUCTION. Aristotle (1984:168) was the first to describe metaphors in his Rhetoric, a treatise on how to speak effectively: 'Metaphor, moreover, gives style clearness, charm, and distinction as nothing else can: and it is not a thing whose use can be taught by one man to another'. This remark focuses on metaphors for the creation of meaning and suggests the individuality of metaphors in representing the thinking of the speaker. Until recently, metaphors have remained part of the study of literature, bur their study moved to linguistics with the publication of Lakoff and Johnson's (1980) Metaphors We Live By which projects the notion that, at least in English, metaphors are an inherent part of language and shows how metaphors provide coherence, using the example of the conceptual metaphor and its conversational usages (77-86) and one-party rational arguments (87-89).
